Become a Member
We are inviting you and your family to become
members of the West Side Neighborhood Association. We are incorporated
by the State of New York and have a large number of members, including
leaders in state and city government, education, law, and business, residents
young and old, long-time and newly arrived, students, retirees, and all
ages in between. We are actively engaged in efforts to encourage historic
preservation, environmental beautification, and enforcement of Zoning and
Code regulations.
Like historic urban neighborhoods across the country, the West Side
is a pleasant, convenient and interesting place to live. The goal of our
neighborhood association is simple - to enhance the quality of life that
we enjoy here. The most important way we do that is by making it easier
for neighbors to be in touch with each other to solve problems and work
on improvements that individuals want to see. By joining, you'll be part
of our virtual e-mail and web community. Thanks to our e-mail list, neighbors
have banded together to fight commercial encroachments on Riverside Drive,
eradicate graffiti on Leroy Street, support the Danielle House for families
of hospitalized children and many other projects. We even found and returned
a lost dog in a single day!
You'll also receive our newsletter, The Westsider, as well as
advance notice of our board, membership, and committee meetings.
Our projects depend on you. To date, WSNA has
-
produced and distributed a brochure to advertise the West Side to realtors
and home buyers (see the online version)
-
in conjunction with Cornell University, started an historic
survey of the Bennett tract in the center of the West Side and presented
preliminary results at four neighborhood
meetings in 2002 through 2005.
-
worked with the City to preserve street
trees
-
facilitated community input into park renovation and construction
-
prepared a study regarding the parks planning process for City Council
-
prepared a survey of information on student housing
patterns
-
spoken before City Council on zoning and
code issues
-
assisted residents in challenging zoning and housing code violations
-
participated in the Citizens' Advisory Committee to provide input for the
Comprehensive
Land Use Plan
-
co-sponsored a Town Meeting with Councilman Joe Sanfilippo that
drew nearly 100 residents
-
participated in the Binghamton University Community/University Relations
Task Force
-
participated in the Gorgeous Washington Arts Fair and National
Night Out
-
had a WSNA team in the American Heart Association's annual Walk/Run
-
participated in Clean Up Day with Councilman Eric Denk
-
and much more
Of course, our plans are just a start. We look forward to working with
you and your family to enhance and preserve our community.
