In Spring, 2008, the Mayor of Binghamton appointed a citizens’ Commission on Housing and Home Ownership to study how to increase homeownership, promote healthy neighborhoods, maintain and improve our housing stock and create more good, safe and legal student rentals. Op-ed: Reasonable Zoning Protects Students and Neighborhoods

An article published Friday, February 20, about a planned meeting between Binghamton University students and the Mayor of Binghamton contained this statement: "Students were encouraged to attend a city meeting this week to voice opposition to a long-discussed code change that would limit the number of unrelated people who can live together in low-density neighborhoods." This description of the zoning law is incorrect. [more]

Press Release: SPS Properties GR-8, LLC

On July 10, the landlord SPS Properties GR-8, LLC (owned by Ken and Gayle Dubensky of Ardsley, New York), pled guilty to a violation of the City Zoning Ordinance in City Court.  SPS Properties had rented a house at 8 Lincoln Avenue to a group of six undergraduates; as a single family unit in an R-1 district, 8 Lincoln Avenue could only be legally occupied by a "functional and factual family unit."  This guilty plea was the final result of a ten-month campaign by a large group of residents and homeowners of the West Side to have the zoning laws enforced in this case. Who we are: The West Side Neighborhood Association (WSNA) is a civic league representing the interests of the low-density residential neighborhoods in the area bounded by the City limits on the West, Front Street on the east, the Susquehanna River on the south, and the railroad tracks on the north. We are incorporated by the State of New York and have a large number of members who encompass all walks of life and all age groups.
